8.2m Electric Wooden Day Cruiser – Naval Architecture, Design & Engineering for Artis Motor Yachts

BRYD designed the Artis 25, an 8.2-metre electric day cruiser for Artis Motor Yachts, combining the character of a classic wooden runabout with quiet, zero-emission electric propulsion.

Developed from the first concept sketches through naval architecture, structural design and engineering, the Artis 25 pairs a hand-crafted timber hull with an 80 kW electric drive and a 60 kWh battery system, creating a refined, low-impact boat for coastal cruising and long days on the water.

Classic Form, Modern Purpose

The design draws on the heritage of traditional wooden launches, with a long, low profile, varnished topsides and a sweeping wraparound windscreen.

Its layout reflects how owners use their boats today: a sociable cockpit with wraparound seating around the helm, a large aft sun pad above a stepped bathing platform, and a forward cabin with a double berth and separate heads.

Design & Engineering

BRYD’s Contribution

BRYD developed the Artis 25 from concept design through naval architecture, structural engineering and production drawings. Our scope included the hull form and general arrangement, exterior and interior styling, power prediction and range analysis, weight studies, stability assessment and the structural arrangement.

Built in Wood

The hull is designed in cedar strip planking sheathed with two ±45° chestnut veneers, supported by chestnut and plywood frames, web frames and bulkheads, with sapele beam shelves. The result is a light, stiff and durable timber structure with the warmth of traditional boatbuilding. Strip-planked and cold-moulded scantling arrangements were compared during development to balance weight, strength and build method.

Designed for Electric Propulsion

Electric power shaped the hull from the outset. Power prediction across light, half-load and fully loaded conditions, together with a hull-beam series study, was used to refine the hull for efficiency. At around 20 kW the Artis 25 cruises at around 10 knots, giving a range of approximately 33 nautical miles from its 60 kWh battery system. Stern-drive and shaft-line propulsion arrangements were both developed.

Compliance

The design was assessed to ISO 12217-1 for Design Category C (inshore waters) with up to eight persons on board, including downflooding and offset-load criteria, with principal dimensions defined to ISO 8666.
