Director & Naval Architect
Ben is a passionate Yacht Designer and Naval Architect, originally from Cowes on the Isle of Wight and now living and working in Hamble. He holds a First Class Honours Batchelor of Engineering degree in Yacht and Powercraft Design from Southampton Solent University, where he also gained the accolade from the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and IMarest of ‘Top Final Year Student’.
Yachts and advancing marine technology have been Ben’s obsession since he can remember, as he was sailing almost daily throughout his youth. In his early 20s, following completion of an HND in Leisure Boat Design in 2003, Ben cut his teeth working for eight years on numerous composite race boat builds; from TP52s to Open 60s, working for a number of well-known racing yacht shore teams, whilst continuing to sail competitively at national and international events.
In 2011 he returned to University to complete his engineering degree and has since worked on a number of high-profile projects from within the design teams. During the latter part of 2016, Ben took the leap to start BRYD with the mission to provide an exceptional and complete yacht design and engineering service to the international leisure marine and superyacht industries.
Growing up in Cowes, Ben has been extremely fortunate to gain a huge amount of sailing experience, racing with some exceptional sailors and teams. This experience includes winning National and European Championships in his youth as crew in small keel boats, being a member of winning teams in UK regattas in Class 0 yachts, TP52s, and the RORC Commodore’s Cup. He has also been given the opportunity to take part in Mini Maxi events, both inshore and offshore, in the Mediterranean.
Offshore and short-handed sailing has always been a huge passion with 4 Fastnet Races, a Middle Sea Race and over 15,000 nautical miles in deliveries, racing and challenges under his belt. This includes a record of 15 days for a non-stop single-handed challenge around the UK and Ireland in a 6.5 metre Mini Transat.
Oliver is an exceptional designer originally from a small town in Cambridgeshire. His love for design started from an early age, inspired by his love of cars and contemporary and progressive automotive design.
Oliver enrolled from the prestigious Automotive & Transport Design course at Coventry University with notable success being shown when he was selected as a finalist for the MAIER design competition in Spain for Autonomous driving concepts in 2017. He discovered his love for yachts on a placement at a highly regarded Italian yacht design house in 2017, which shaped his future ambitions. He gained his MDes Degree in 2018 following his ‘distinction’ in an Art & Design diploma.
Since graduating, Oliver gained a wealth of experience with placements in Yacht and Aviation design houses, as well as working for one of the UK’s largest yacht manufacturers before he joined BRYD in 2019.
Since he joined BRYD, Oliver has helped Ben to forge new design processes, adding creativity and innovative ideas in abundance and enabling high quality translation of ideas through modelling, sketching and visualisations across all aspects of individual projects.
Systems, Software and Engineering Consultant
Steuart, originally from Somerset but now based in Weymouth, is a highly experienced domain specialist in the maritime defence industry, providing expertise in mathematical modelling and algorithms since 2007.
Steuart has always had a passion for problem solving, learning to program BASIC on his Amstrad CPC at the age of 7. He graduated with a First Class Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Southampton University and gained the accolade of IMechE ‘Student of the Year’ along the way.
He has continuously applied and developed his competencies, working on a variety of applications including specialist radar systems’ design and development, underwater systems test and evaluation and yacht design performance simulation.
Steuart has been (formally or informally) an integral part of BRYD since its inception, providing a mainstay of support with his talents and first-principles’ approach to solving highly complex problems. As a focus amongst a number of areas, Steuart works closely with Ben in developing the performance, VPP and optimisation software FormFlow.
Megan works part time as a project manager for BRYD whilst also training in the British Sailing Team. She aims to compete and medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 49erFX, of which she helms.
Megan has grown up surrounded by boats, fascinated constantly with how to make them faster and perform at the top level. She has been a part of the RYA Squad Program since the age of 11, winning the 420 Worlds in 2011 and medalling at various Junior and Open European and World Championships in the 420 and 470.
