5m Cold Moulded Electric Drive Launch - Designed for BlueTree Boat Builders

This 5-metre wooden launch was developed in close collaboration with BlueTree Boat Builders as part of their growing range of elegant, small-scale electric craft. Our role was to deliver a complete naval architecture and design package—supporting BlueTree’s vision with a practical, build-ready solution that captured the aesthetic and functional goals of the project.

Design-Led Development

The brief called for a refined, quiet-running electric day launch suitable for the Thames and other inland waterways. Our approach focused on blending traditional lines with clean, contemporary detailing. The result is a design that sits confidently between heritage and innovation—retaining the charm of a classic river launch while optimising form and structure for modern performance and sustainability.

We provided full the design, naval architecture, and construction detailing tailored to BlueTree’s preferred materials and build methods. Close attention was paid to proportions, trim, and hydrodynamic balance—ensuring not only an attractive profile but also reliable, efficient performance with electric drive

"This project was a pleasure to be involved in. It demonstrates how thoughtful naval architecture can complement traditional craftsmanship—delivering not only a beautiful launch, but one that performs quietly and efficiently with modern electric propulsion. Working closely with BlueTree Boat Builders, we were able to create a design that respected the elegance of classic wooden craft while meeting today’s standards for usability and sustainability. Our approach is always to listen carefully, design practically, and support builders with the detail they need to bring a concept to life with confidence.”

Design & Construction

Structure and Build Support

Working closely with BlueTree’s workshop team, we designed the hull to be constructed from sustainable Vendia marine ply over laminated oak and Douglas fir framework. The structural layout was developed for efficient assembly and long-term durability, with careful detailing around the drive pod, bulkheads, and internal fit-out. Our design package included comprehensive digital modelling, CNC-ready outputs, and construction drawings—reducing ambiguity in the build process and supporting a smooth transition from drawing board to water.

Outcome

The finished vessel is a beautifully built launch that showcases both craftsmanship and quiet innovation. Powered by an electric pod drive and finished to a high standard with a traditional timber interior, it exemplifies what’s possible when design and build expertise come together early in the process. The launch now operates on the River Thames, delivering clean, low-impact boating in a refined and classically styled package.
